A Patriotic Idea

This shoot was a little different than other shoots I had done before, where this one was inspired by Memorial Day, and I wanted to do a shoot to thank the troops for their service, since there was an Air Force base near Lubbock. I had gotten an American flag, and I had an idea of a location, now I just had to find a couple of patriotic individuals to do the shoot.

The Team

Now, I had the opportunity to work with two brand new individual models, Kristie and Taylor. Kristie is a fitness model, and bodybuilder who was relatively new to the photoshoot game, not that you could really tell. Taylor was also fairly new to the modelling world, and she actually was a friend of Ainsleigh, who gave me a good endorsement. There is nothing better to build your confidence than getting good word of mouth support from the models you work with.

THE SETTING | THE LUBBOCK MURAL

Funny story about this location, I was driving home from work on I-27, and traffic was having to be diverted due to construction being done. As I was finding a workaround way to get home, I was driving by a few older buildings on the outskirts of Lubbock, and I came across this mural on the side of an electrician's office. I took note of this spot, and told myself, "I DEFINITELY got to use this spot, this is Lubbock-ana."

First Shoot | Kristie Perry

Kristie reached out first to my ad, so we went out Memorial Day weekend to the mural, and she absolutely rocked the shoot. Her style was a perfect fit for the setting, and her sleeve created an additional level of complexity to the photos. She was nervous and wasn't sure what to do with posing at first, but as she got more comfortable, her personality started to come out more and more. Once I gave her the flag, the joy was so evident on her face, I could tell she was really starting to enjoy herself.

Second Shoot | Taylor Renfroe

The second model that chose to participate was Taylor, she was also relatively new to the modeling world. However, I saw that as a challenge to create a great shoot, and a way to learn how to express my ideas and my vision to a model. Overall, Taylor did a great job for one of her first shoots, and she was a real trooper being patient with me and working with me as we got the shots. By far, my favorites were the flag shots, there was a feeling of lightheartedness and fun while we took these shots.

Looking Back

This shoot was a great experience for me, because I was definitely still learning how to do portrait photography, as well as learning how to talk and work with models. Fortunately, I had two models who gave me the opportunity to develop my methods, and on top of that, gave me some great photos to honor the troops. I definitely would like to do another one of these shoots, and if you're reading this and would like to work with me, contact me through the link below, I would love to get to know you and work with you!
